在新界的西北部，香港其實還留有一片廣闊無垠的田野和濕地。
位於新界元朗東面的南生圍，便是香港其中一片還可以讓人感受天寬地闊的濕地景致的迷人地方。
南生圍是位於香港新界元朗區橫洲東面的地方，被東面的錦田河及西面的山貝河所包圍。南生圍的「圍」就是基圍的意思，基圍主要飼養的就是基圍蝦。南生圍原本很多基圍、魚塘及農地的地方，而村民大多在塘邊架起小木屋居住。可是自20世紀90年代中，元朗急速發展，城市化之下南生圍亦不能倖免，以致大量魚塘及農地被荒廢。
錦田河與山貝河的交匯處有個小島，猶如一個雀鳥天堂。因為水退時，小島泥灘旁有很多候鳥在停留，尤其是黑面琵鷺。
魚塘上有些蘆葦草，荒廢的魚塘、還有遠處的小山丘，小樹林，小鄉村等等。可見荒廢魚塘的倒影，加上遠處幾棵疏落的大樹，更是寫生、淡天說地的勝地。
