 Roger Quilter 1877 - 1953

 最初與他邂后是在準備聲樂考試的時候, 其中一首作品是他以莎士比亞的詩句所譜的歌曲, 自己也很喜歡.  在準備寫節目簡介時, 漸漸對這位英國紳士多了點點認識...

 Roger Quilter 被稱為一位溫文儀雅和風度翩翩的英國作曲家。他出生於1877年11月1日英國蘇塞克斯他父母的家中。

他優雅的歌曲包括“"Love's Philosophy", "Come Away Death", "Weep You No More", "By the Sea" 和 "O Mistress Mine" 。

在YouTube找來一段Love's Philosophy的視頻予大家分享.

Love's Philosophy is a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, written in 1820.
The fountains mingle with the river
And the rivers with the Ocean,
The winds of Heaven mix for ever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single;
All things by a law divine
in one spirit meet and mingle.
Why not I with thine?--
See the mountains kiss high Heaven
And the waves clasp one another;
No sister-flower would be forgiven
If it disdained its brother;
And the sunlight clasps the earth
And the moonbeams kiss the sea:
What is all this sweet work worth
If thou kiss not me?

Roger Quilter was known as a gentle and gentlemanly English composer of elegant songs.  He was born at his parents’ home in Hove, Sussex, UK, on November 1st 1877.

His popular songs include "Love's Philosophy", "Come Away Death", "Weep You No More", "By the Sea", and his setting of "O Mistress Mine". Quilter's setting of verses from the Tennyson poem "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" is one of his earliest songs but is nonetheless characteristic of the later, mature style.

However, the song I love most is "Cherry Valley" which is the second song of Op.20 "Three Pastoral Songs".  Three Pastoral Songs set verses by a contemporary Irish poet, Joseph Campbell. It dates from 1921 and was designed originally for low voice and piano trio.

"Three Pastoral Songs"
- I will go with my father a ploughing,
- Cherry Valley, and
- I wish and I wish.
